Green logistics: Optimize your packages to reduce the environmental impact of your supply chain

Logistics is the lifeblood of our economy. Without it, there is no link between producers and consumers, therefore no more industry or trade.
The severity of the consequences of climate change, however, requires that we now be more resource-efficient. Logistics will remain essential, but it must adapt today by reducing its impacts as quickly as possible.
While these changes will take years to implement, other internal levers are already available: optimizing packaging in order preparation.

Case study: a distribution platform

A distributor of hardware, tools, and industrial supplies:

  • 3,000 orders per day
  • 3,800 packages shipped daily
  • 5 RSC box sizes (American boxes)
  • Fill rate: 43% → 69 m³ of empty space shipped every day

The project: the implementation of a latest generation WMS and three packaging lines, combining PAC600 formers and Jivaro closing machines from SAVOYE.

Three steps to reduce the impact of packaging

Eliminate unnecessary packaging

The package with the least impact… is the one you didn’t send!

An advanced WMS can merge several orders into a single package, optimize item placement (Tetris mode) and choose the most suitable box.

Result: up to 20% fewer parcels, i.e. 120 tons of cardboard and 100 tons of CO2 saved per year.

Reduce parcel size with PAC600 + Jivaro

It is not possible to use an infinite number of cardboard formats. The solution: adjust the height of each parcel using Jivaro machines.

By combining PAC600 and Jivaro, the benefits are threefold:

01

Reducing the amount of cardboard used

PAC600 boxes use 10% less cardboard than traditional boxes.
> 35 tons of CO₂ saved each year.

02

Improving the fill rate

The increase in fill rate from 43% to 78% eliminates the need for wedging.
> 66 tons of CO₂ avoided each year.

03

Reducing the volume transported

Nearly 60 m³ saved per day = 30,000 km of truck travel avoided per year.
> 39 tons less CO₂.

Recycle smartly

Recycling remains important, but it is not enough.

According to Federec and ADEME, recycled cardboard emits twice as much CO₂ as virgin cardboard during production, despite lower energy consumption.
Conclusion: above all, we must reduce cardboard at source.

The benefits: CO₂, savings, and customer image

In total, this project has saved 140 tons of CO₂ per year, equivalent to 18 trips around the world by car.

Economy

ROI in 3 years thanks to less cardboard used and higher productivity.

Durability

Reliable machines delivering over 10 years of performance with minimal wear.

Picto quality

Customer Experience

Optimized parcels = stronger brand image and less waste to handle.

Conclusion

Optimization before recycling

Reducing, adjusting, and optimizing packaging is the most effective way to combine economic performance and environmental impact.
